A Foslom Chiropractor That Refuses to Adjust?

If you were to ask anyone what a chiropractor did, you would most likely here phrases such as:

  • cracks backs
  • adjusts
  • and occasionally spinal manipulation (although not entirely correct, it is sometimes used)

And if you were to then ask someone who went to a chiropractor why they went, you would then hear something like:

I go to my chiropractor to get adjusted.

What if you showed up to your chiropractic appointment and then your doctor refused to adjust you?

Folsom Chiropractor | Tom Gibson DCThis is what happens in the office of Dr. Tom Gibson, DC.  He refuses to adjust his patients.  And he does so quite frequently.

While attending Life Chiropractic College West, he questioned the idea that everyone needs to get adjusted.

He was taught that the basic idea behind a chiropractic adjustment is that a bone in your back is out of place, which places pressure on a nerve, causing nerve interference.  By “adjusting” the “out of place bone” a chiropractor claims that the nerve interference is reduced.

And then came the idea that “everyone needs to be adjusted”.

At every chiropractic visit everyone needed an adjustment.  The more patients were adjusted, the better.  And that didn’t sit right with him.

He didn’t go to a dentist to have his teeth drilled and then filled for no reason.  He went there to have his teeth checked.  And then, if necessary, have his teeth drilled and then filled.

He began to question:

What if he adjusted someone that didn’t need to be adjusted?  Would that adjustment cause harm?

How could he know when someone needed to be adjusted and more importantly when not to adjust that person?

He reasoned that maybe patients didn’t need to be adjusted all the time.  Only when there was pressure on a nerve causing interference was an adjustment necessary.

How Technology Helped Dr. Gibson Answer These Questions

Towards the beginning of his education, Dr. Gibson was introduced to a technology that helped him understand when and more importantly when not to adjust his patients.

Paraspinal Infrared Thermography allows a doctor (who is trained in its use) to see how the nervous system is functioning.  Much like an EKG for the heart, this FDA approved medical device can helps identify when nerve interference is present.

With this technology, Dr. Gibson will often tell his patients that they don’t need to be adjusted.  By knowing when and when not to adjust patients, he may be able to help a variety of conditions that are not commonly associated with chiropractic.  For more information on what other conditions may be helped, see Testimonials
